Welcome to the May Newsletter from the Marine Discovery Centre.

Not only has the centre been fully booked with excursions and community days for the first half of the year we have also been branching out attending a couple of Science Fairs that are organised by The Science Collective. These have been a wonderful opportunity to chat with thousands of people and share the work that the MDC does in education about South Australia's marine environment.

With thanks to the support of the Green Adelaide grant, the MDC is busy finalising a few projects that will improve the visitor experience within the centre. These new projects will start to roll out over the next few weeks and we look forward to showcasing an enhanced interactive and educational experience to all of our visitors. Earlier this year we purchased 15 new virtual reality headsets, where users get to virtually swim with South Australia's marine life in 360-degree experience thanks to footage from Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries.

There is availability for school and group bookings to visit the MDC. Book online>

Stay up to date with upcoming events that we list regularly on our website. We have also highlighted a few upcoming events in this newsletter

Free Healing - by Rebecca Carey

I’ve always had a fascination with water, particularly the ocean and I’m sure a lot of you have too. I’ve always seemed to be drawn to it as it gives me a sense of calm and often inspires me. Lately, I’ve started to question why.

2021 introduction video for school students

My journey in Marine Science.png

A presentation for potential marine science students

Currently in high school and thinking about a pathway into marine science?

Join marine ecologist, Nathan Janetzki and explore some of the career pathways stemming from a marine science degree.

This is a free event and will be held in the school holidays - Monday 12 July 2pm - 3.30pm

Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/153575148403

My journey: forging a career in marine science

It’s halfway through year 10, and the school advisor is nagging a 15-year old Nathan about career aspirations and subject selection for years 11 & 12. How annoying! Doesn’t this silly person know that entering the work force is literally years away, and all that really matters right now is maintaining my popularity and catching the eye of my high school crush?

Follow my journey from a high school student who loved recreational fishing, to being a confused undergraduate university student with no career aspirations, to getting my doctorate in marine ecology and becoming a marine ecologist for COOE, an environmental consultancy based in Adelaide. Along the way we will review the decisions and experiences on this journey, laugh at the naivety of teenage Nathan, and explore some of the career pathways stemming from a marine science degree.
